I wrapped up Lost Planet today. After playing the entire game with a mouse and keyboard, I had to pick up my Xbox controller for the last mission. I had grown accustomed to running around on foot, grappling onto terrain, and even piloting a variety of clunky robots. I had been having fun, really.
Then in the final mission (SPOILERS!), Wayne’s magic-MacGuffin forearm unlocked his mech’s full potential, and I had to fight a foppish, mad doctor in midair space combat. I wish I was kidding.
The first time this sequence started, a bunch of new controls splashed onscreen, none of which were mapped to keyboard. It doesn’t matter anyway; the way Capcom has laid it out, this 3-D space fight is nearly unplayable without a controller. My frustration with this cheap, awkward fight was such that my poor monitor and gamepad were on the verge of extreme intimacy. I know my wife was getting worried about all the cursing and snarling.
I did manage to beat it, but it didn’t feel satisfying. Beating Dark Souls had been satisfying, and this was definitely not Dark Souls. I was so disgusted, I didn’t even watch the finale cutscene. I no longer cared. The prior fun was forgotten, the experience soured. Goodbye Lost Planet. I’m better off with you uninstalled.
