I finally got to try my hand at Wonderful 101. It is a delightful experience that I am not great at for some reason. The controls take some getting used to, and I’m having a hard time knowing where my hit box is when controlling a huge mob. Each segment scores your time, combos, and damage taken. I am consistently getting great combo scores while simultaneously being slow and getting my face punched in.

If you are thinking about trying it out, you should know that there is no shame in playing in Easy mode until you get the hang of things. There are complex systems to learn here, and even avid fans of character-action games will stumble a bit with the differences in this one. You can change your difficulty between missions, so you’re free to bump it back up if it starts feeling too easy.

By the way, Platinum knows exactly what they’re doing. The story is this sort of hokey, tongue-in-cheek take on typical sentai entertainment (think Power Rangers if you don’t know the term) and it is oh so charming. It’s just the right amount of cheesiness to let you know that they’re in on the joke too. They’ve even got a Saturday-morning-cartoonesque theme song that plays during intense moments, and I am loving every second of it.

The visuals are stylish and beautiful with a lot of vivid color. Some people may not like the unusually large heads, but they’re easier to distinguish when your character is among the mob. It is a lot of fun, and I’m really glad I bought a Wii U for this. I just wish I had more time to play it. Some of the missions are taking me 30 minutes to an hour to complete. There will definitely be no sneaking some game-time during lunch breaks with this one.
